Galatians

No Other Gospel

All letters are written with a purpose—love letters, letters of employment, letters of dismissal, and so on. Paul’s letter to the churches in Galatia is no different. It was written because the essential and beautiful gospel truth that all people are made right before God by faith rather than by human works was being denied by a group in the church. And so Paul writes them a letter. A letter that emphasizes that there is only one gospel and no other, a gospel of liberation and freedom which comes by grace and not human effort.

Galatians 2:11-14

May 25, 2025

The coming of God’s Spirit upon ‘impure’ Gentiles, just as at Pentecost, was arguably the most challenging moment in apostolic history. No wonder it required the direct involvement of Peter—always listed first among the Twelve. However, it had such staggering implications for the new identity of God’s people that even Peter began to have second thoughts. This week in Galatians we’ll look at the extraordinary confrontation between Paul—the former Pharisee and one of the foremost Torah scholars of his day—and Peter. Its outcome determined the future of the church, with seismic implications for the place of the Mosaic Law.
